Dr Cerith Waters

Senior Lecturer in perinatal clinical psychology, Cardiff University.

Dr Cerith Waters is the lead clinical psychologist for perinatal mental health services in Cardiff and Vale University Health Board and Senior Lecturer in Clinical Psychology and Developmental Psychopathology at Cardiff University.

Cerith completed his undergraduate dissertation in 2003 with Dr Susan Pawlby at the Channi Kumar Mother and Baby Unit (MBU) in South London. Cerith was studying mother-infant interaction in the context of severe mental illness and it was during this time that he became hooked on the ideas of Colwyn Trevarthen and the perinatal mental health speciality.

Cerith went on to complete his PhD on two longitudinal studies of child development (The South London Child Development Study and the Cardiff Child Development Study), studying the impact of perinatal depression on children’s cognitive, behavioural and emotional development in the context of young motherhood.

In 2008 Cerith began training in the NHS as a Clinical Psychologist and since qualifying has focused on developing psychological interventions and clinical services for families identified as at risk during the perinatal period.
